Most breeds of dog will live 10-15 years or more, so choosing a companion starts with learning about dogs in general. Are you looking for a bird dog? Choose a pet with a soft mouth like a retriever. Are you looking for an active dog? Consider working breeds like sheepdogs. Perhaps you prefer elusive game or you do search and rescue, in which case you want a dog with an especially keen sense of smell. The internet is full of information on dogs, but for the most detailed information it is best to consult a local chapter of the AKC (American Kennel Club) or a local library. Once you know what kind of activities you will do with your dog, you can narrow down your choices based on breed traits and tendencies, and you can prepare for the responsibilities of dog ownership. Even after you have chosen a few possibilities, always allow yourself to get to know the animal before bringing him/her home, because the dog will be your companion for the next decade … maybe two!
