Would you give your Social Security number to a bum?
Suppose you were walking down the street — if a bum or hobo or other disreputable person were to pop out of nowhere and ask you for your Social Security number — would you give it to them? Probably not — yet many people, millions in fact, do the equivalent every day, when they are online. What happens is this: they visit a website, they “assume” that a website has a legitimate need for personal information — and voluntarily surrender it. They do all of this because they do not understand the basics on data security — perhaps they are unaware of just what great damage could be done to them if this personal information were misused.
